YEREVAN, March 29. /ARKA/. At a press briefing today, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova was asked to comment on State Duma’s member Mikhail Delyagin’s proposal to launch a nuclear strike against Azerbaijan.

Earlier, speaking in 60 Minutes talk show on a state-run TV channel Delyagin called for "punishing Azerbaijan" for being responsible for another escalation of tension in Nagorno-Karabakh. Delyagin suggested striking Azerbaijan’s oil fields.

President Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov retaliated by urging Delyagin to control his personal emotions and not to make unfriendly statements against Azerbaijan.

"Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov has already commented (on Delyagin’s statement). Naturally, we fully agree with Peskov’s assessment. On my own behalf, I can add that we consider any such statements absolutely unacceptable and irresponsible. They in no way reflect the official position of our country, the Russian leadership, which is aimed at building allied interaction and strategic partnership with Baku. We are sure that an appropriate assessment will be given to such provocative statements by the leadership of the State Duma," Zakharova said.

On March 24 Azerbaijani troops invaded the Armenian–populated village of Parukh in the Askeran region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is in the zone of Russian peacekeepers’ responsibility, triggering deadly fighting with Karabakh Armenian forces.

According to Nagorno-Karabakh defense ministry, at least 5 Azerbaijani soldiers and three Armenian soldiers were killed and many others wounded. Azerbaijani troops partially withdrew from the area after the intervention of Russian peacekeepers stationed in Karabakh. -0-
